SACON’s location at Anaikatty with the backdrop of the Western Ghats, one of the ‘hot spots’ of biodiversity in the world, offers endless opportunities to undertake long term studies on various aspects of its varied avifauna and on the biological principles and phenomena involved in the maintenance of the fragile systems. The trijunction of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in the Western Ghats, considered to be one of the best wildlife areas in the country having a large extent of Protected Areas, is only a few hours drive away. SACON sets up field stations in various parts of the country according to the requirements of the research projects. |

The SACON laboratory is equipped with the following and is probably the best in the country for ecotoxicological studies of birds and wildlife: |
| |
Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) Perkin Elmer, Model 3300 with 13 lamps for analyzing metal contamination. |
Mercury Hydride Generator Perkin Elmer for analyzing mercury and other hydride forming elements. |
Gas Chromatography (GC) Hewlett Packard Model 5890 Series II with three detectors, namely Electron Capture Detector (ECD), Nitrogen Phosphorous Detector (NPD) and Flame Photometric Detector (FPD) for analyzing pesticide residues. |
Microwave Digestion System Milestone Model 1200 for digesting samples for analysis in the AAS. |
High volume air sample for analyzing suspended particulate matters (spar), oxides of Nitrogen (NOX) and Sulphur (SOX). |
HPLC Agilent Technology Model 1100 series with DAD and Florescence detector. |
Ultra Deep Freezer (-800 C), New Brunkswick. |
Gas Chromatograph, Hewlett Packard Model 5890 Series II with three detectors, (Electron Capture Detector-ECD), Nitrogen Phosphorous |
Detector-NPD and Flame Photometric Detector-FPD) for analyzing pesticide residues and organic pollutants.
All Quartz Double distillation unit capacity 1.5 Ltrs/Hour, Model-AQDD-15P-DB/XL/RSH. |
Rotavapor R-215/V with heating bath, Vacuum Controller and Vacuum Pump. |
| Laboratory
has also been equipped to monitor air quality, water and soil. |

Library |
| |
A
two-storey building placed both on the ground is an unique feature
of the library and laboratory buildings. It is spacious enough (total
15,000 sq. ft) to accommodate around 50 people at a time. Separate
reading facilities are provided for students, faculty and visiting
scientists. Individual blocks are provided for current journals, back
volumes and books, which make the library user-friendly. Issue of
books and other library transactions with library are computerized. |

- Ornithology
- Conservation
- Mammals
- Ecotoxicology
