Completed graduation in Botany in 1980. After
completing post graduation in Wildlife Biology in 1982, joined
in the Bombay Natural History Society as Field Biologist. Worked
in the "Bird Migration Project" and "Ecology of Point Calimere-An
Endangered Ecosystem" project.Participated in the extensive bird
ringing programmes in south India. Experienced in bird banding,
ageing and censusing birds. For the Doctoral dissertation, studied
the "Plant-animal interactions with reference to fruiting seasonality
and seed dispersal by vertebrates in Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary"
and was awarded Ph. D. by the Bombay University in 1990. Continued
the same work till 1992. |
|
| |
In 1992, joined in the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology
and Natural History as Scientist. From 1992 to till date working
in the Terrestrial Ecology Division and conducted research on
vegetation ecology and plant-bird interactions. Investigated the
following projects: |
 |
| |
Role of birds in Seed dispersal and natural regeneration of forest
plants in Tamil Nadu, Western Ghats. (Principal Investigator)
3 years.
Impact of human interference on plant and bird communities in
Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Western Ghats (Co-investigator) 3 years.
Hornbill-tree interactions with special reference to identification
and conservation of "Keystone mutualists" in Nilgiri Biosphere
Reserve (Principal Investigator) 3 years.
Ethnoecology and phytochemistry of medicinal plants in the Nilgiri
Biosphere Reserve (Principal Investigator) 3 years.

Interests |
|
| |
Major
area of research interest : Plant-bird interactions |
|
| |
Plant-bird
interactions: Many of the tropical trees produce fleshy fruits
adapted for consumption by vertebrates and most of the frugivorous
animals rely on fleshy fruits for food at least part of the year.
Among the frugivorous vertebrates, birds by virtue of their nature
play a predominant role in seed dissemination of their food plants
and thereby contribute to the regeneration of forests. Understanding
the various facets of fruit-frugivore interactions, namely food
selection, seed dispersal, seed predation and defence mechanisms
along with the peculiar characteristic features of plants with reference
to both academic and applied values are my prime interests. A project
has been completed on plant-bird interactions in a deciduous forest
ecosystem in Western Ghats with a major interest to identify suitable
native bird-dispersed species for reforestation of degraded sites.
Research findings of this project were successfully implemented
by the Sate forest department in the study area, as it was cost-effective.
With regard to the academic interests, a few projects are being
carried out in Western Ghats which addreses the following questions:
|
 |
| |
 |
Whether fruiting seasonality in tropical forest influence hornbill
population? |
 |
Whether fruit preferences of hornbills vary in relation to the
fruit size, structure and chemistry |
|
|
